Climate Change

Author: Ian Bishop

Now, I’m English. No people in the world talk about the weather as much as the English. That’s because we have so very much of it. In fact, look at the word I used. Other countries, regions, people talk about “climate”. England has “weather”. “Climate” implies an unchanging, or slowly changing set of conditions. “Weather” implies rapid change, unpredictability.

One reason why Britain, especially England, pioneered short-haul package holidays back in the 1950s was a serious need for sun and warmth for a few uninterrupted days every year. We loved, and still do love to head off to Spain, France, Turkey, or indeed anywhere with “climate”. Anywhere we can guarantee a week or so of uninterrupted warmth and sunshine.

Unfortunately, so great is the demand for holidays in the sun that we British tend to flood en masse to seaside holiday resorts where we spend all our time among other Brits, eating (mostly) British food, and getting (often) badly burned by the sun to which we are (largely) unaccustomed!

The reason why Britain seems to have such an obsession with the sun is easy to see when you look at a map of the world. First, we’re perched out on the western edge of Europe, exposed to the gales of the North Atlantic Ocean. Secondly, look how far north we are. London is in the deep south of England, and sits just above the 51o line of latitude. That’s a lot further north than Hokkaido, Japan’s northern main island, where they get monstrous snowfalls. It’s north of everywhere in the USA. The only reason why Britain doesn’t freeze in winter is that Atlantic currents bring warm water up from the Gulf of Mexico, and the westerly winds blow the warm air over us!

Small wonder, then, that one of the great joys of travel for a Brit is getting off a plane and feeling the heat and humidity of somewhere that enjoys “climate”. The baking dry heat of Egypt, or the moist heat of Indonesia. The exquisite blending of heat, blue sky and blue sea of Greece or Turkey.

We seldom think about what it feels like to make the journey in reverse. What does someone from Asia, for example, think when he or she gets off the plane in London, Amsterdam or Berlin, in winter? The combination of very short days, long nights, cold wind, rain? It must be a real shock to someone whose only real experience of cold is when the shopping mall has the air conditioning turned up too high!

I realise that I have brought day length into the discussion. At a latitude of 51o north we in the UK get 16-17 hours of daylight in mid-summer, and it never really gets very dark. Winter is different. In December we have daylight from around 9.00am to 4.00pm.

What kind of climate, or weather, to plan for is part of the joy of travel, or maybe is one of the problems of travel, depending on your point of view. Coming from, say, Indonesia to northern Europe I guess the problems would arise mostly in the European winters, where average temperatures drop so much below what Indonesians are used to. Actually the average temperatures even in summer (June, July and August) very rarely indeed get up anywhere near Indonesian levels. And it can always rain. And the rain is cold!

For an Indonesian going to work or study abroad the weather (or climate) has to be one of the things you need to plan for. You’ll need to learn to put lots of layers of clothing on, on the colder days in northern latitudes, maybe also a hat and gloves. You will definitely need heavier shoes than you are used to, and a waterproof/windproof coat for winter. My problem coming to Indonesia is which tee shirts and lightweight trousers to pack!

Whether you are going to northern Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand to stay for a while or just to visit, it’s essential that you think about the climate area you’re visiting, and the general weather over the period of your visit. Get yourself prepared for the changing seasons, the changing temperatures, the different lengths of day and night that you’ll experience.

And if you are fortunate enough to live in Jakarta, don’t forget that there’s a team of people at AIM, in Manggarai who can help you get ready for the weather where you’re going, at the same time as they help you with your English.

Don't Worry About 2012

Author: Joseph Toth

Don’t Worry About 2012

There’s a lot of buzz about the year 2012, and it being the year of devastation. You have people from all walks of life trying to apply predictions to December of 2012, including some professionals and historians. I’ve heard people refer to different types of troubles they think should be expected from this calendar time frame.

Listening to the way the human mind can work when a level of fear or an unknown element is introduced is just amazing. First of all, …the people concerned about this may actually have some fears that were fed by stories they’ve absorbed in life. Our lifestyle of being a society that watches a lot of television and movies really doesn’t help this either. Our minds become very influential, resulting in things like this concern about 2012, or back when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000 (Y2K).

I recently had an encounter with a grown man, older than I am …who is absolutely beside himself because of this 2012 thing that’s going on. I caught him talking about this with someone else. After the other person left the area, I approached him saying I overheard him talking about 2012. This resulted in a lengthy conversation between the two of us on this matter. No, …I wasn’t buying into the fact that tragedy would strike, nor was I patronizing this man by no means. Rather, I would call it educating myself on how some people are using this date to predict the end of the world, when its not.

First I’d like to point something out. Calendars and clocks are man-made time keeping devices. There isn’t another life form on this huge planet, or in this galaxy that uses these time keeping methods. They are proprietary to the human race only. Animals, birds and sea creatures have no clue that humans use names and numbers for the days of the week, or that we call 365 days a year. Mother earth knows nothing of human time keeping either. To lock in a particular time frame for the end of the world is simply ridiculous.

Secondly, …as for the earth being riddled with worldwide earthquakes and storms, or the fear that the earth will stop rotating on its axis, or that continents will shift is just plain and simple ‘Hog Wash’.

Continents shifting is an event that takes tens of thousands of years to do, and it doesn’t happen all at once. This happens so slowly that life forms of any kind, including humans, would never even notice it happening.

If the rotation of the earth slows down, this would definitely change gravitational pull, which you would notice simply by standing on your bathroom scale. If the rotation of the earth would slow down, the earth’s gravity would get weaker. This means when you step on your bathroom scale, you could get a reading of 20 to 100 pounds lighter than normal. I don’t know about everybody else, but I way myself every morning …for the last two years or so my weight has been very consistent. Trust me, the earth is not slowing down or going to stop rotating.

Mother earth isn’t even showing signs of being sick, yet alone going to die in two years.

What do I think is going to happen on the 2012 date in question? I’ll tell you.

My alarm clock is going to go off in the morning; I’ll eat and shower before heading to work. I’ll come home after work so I can get a good nights sleep and do it all over again the next day, and the next day, and for decades to come until I grow old and gray.

People made a big fuss over Y2K too, only to find out it was really nothing.

President Arroyo will run again in 2010

Yes you've read it right, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will run again in 2010 but it not for the position of president but as a congresswoman in her home province, Pampanga. “Yes, I will file my certificate of candidacy,” Arroyo told reporters in the Macanang palace when she was interviewed about her political plans when she step down on her position on June 2010. She revealed her political plans just the night before the deadline of filing of certificates of candidacy.

Many critics says that once Arroyo is elected into office, her colleagues in Congress would push for a shift into a parliamentary system of government and subsequently elect her as prime minister, thus allowing her to circumvent the Constitution and return to power anew.

Philippines Veteran Got Check For Lump-sum

Finally after the long months of waiting my grandfathers check was got into the hands of my mother. My mother was the one who is taking care of filing and getting the necessary documents for my grandfather because my he can't travel that much because of his old age. The check was from US bank amounting to $ 9,000.00. According to the local banks here in the Philippines it will take up to 2 to 3 weeks for that check to be cleared because it is from outside our country.
By the way let me tell you something about my veteran grandfather, his name was Nicanor Luz as of today his physical condition was still okay in spite of his old age, he can still walk, he don't have difficulties in hearing and the only problem is he got some loss of his memory, he can't recognize most of his family. But if you ask him about the war and how fight, he can still remember every bit of the story. Until now he still have the anger against the Japanese, when you told him that there is a Japanese near by he closed his fist and say "where are those Japanese I will kill them, they make us all suffer". I know that he suffered a lot and sacrifice a lot, that's why until now he can still feel that way.
The sacrifices of every Filipino veterans during the WWII is really priceless, but still we should be thankful that US still recognizes all their efforts for fighting our freedom.

Villar, Legarda Team Up For 2010 Elections

MANILA, Philippines -- Sen. Loren Legarda called it a victorious day for two Mannys.

On the day Manny Pacquiao made history as the only fighter to dominate seven weight divisions, Sen. Manuel "Manny" Villar Jr. quietly captured the heart of his much-coveted vice presidential running mate.

At a private dinner in Makati City Sunday, Sen. Loren Legarda said yes to the standard-bearer of the Nacionalista Party, who showed up with his spouse Cynthia, the representative of Las Piñas.

Villar will personally make the announcement on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Laurel House on Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong.

Legarda confirmed this to the Philippine Daily Inquirer in an interview shortly after the dinner, which lasted three hours.

In explaining her decision to coalesce with Villar, Legarda spoke out on charges that Villar's real estate empire benefited from the C-5 road extension project

Reminded that she once criticized Villar's decision not to participate in the ethics investigation by the Senate, Legarda said: "I don’t even call that criticism. In a democracy, you allow all views to come out. I wanted it to come out so that we can listen to all views," she said, adding that she would not prejudge the results of the investigation being conducted by the Senate committee of the whole.

"A committee report is coming out. All I can say is let the people decide in next year's elections. I will not prejudge him and the issue," said Legarda.

Legarda said her decision was based on the fact that their platforms clicked.

"He told me, 'I believe in your platform on environment, agriculture and climate change, and then I said, 'I believe in your platform on helping migrant workers and pushing for their rights.' In that respect, we clicked right away," she told this reporter.

She made it clear to Villar that the next administration should focus on the environment as the cornerstone of the overarching goal to defeat abject poverty in the land.

"I want the country to be great again, green again, and what I bring to the vice presidency is green economy, investments and jobs, and green sustainable development," said Legarda, who has championed environmental causes for over two decades.

The one-on-one meeting between Legarda and Villar followed several weeks of talks, but finally materialized on the auspicious and victorious day of Pacquaio.

"It was a day of two Mannys," quipped Legarda, pointing out that Pacquiao's victory had largely brought glory, inspiration and hope to a storm-devastated nation.

"His victory gave us hope that the Filipino can," she said.

There was no fanfare in finally sealing an election union, which was largely expected by political observers following the decision of Sen. Francis Escudero to bolt the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC).

That decision stunned the nation, leaving Legarda suddenly without a presidential running mate.

Legarda refused to comment on rumors reaching NPC that its erstwhile standard-bearer has been his own run for vice president.

"No comment, for now," she said.

Legarda said that once elected vice president, she would ensure the strict implementation of environmental laws she had authored, and make the national budget "anchored on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction."

This will benefit agriculture, fisheries and rural livelihood.

"There is hope if we only give priority to the countryside," she said, pointing to empowerment of local government units as critical to effective governance.

"If we bring government closer to the people, then we bring peace and prosperity to the countryside," she said, explaining that environment was a cross-cutting issue.

Asked how would giving premium on the environment address widespread hunger among Filipinos, she said:
"Going green is an antidote to poverty because climate change directly affects our right to food, potable water and access to jobs and livelihood as what storms Ondoy and Pepeng have shown," said Legarda.

Asked why she chose Villar over other presidential aspirants who also courted her to be their running mate, she said: "I woke up one day realizing that our platform and aspirations for this country, especially uplifting the poor's lot in life, converged. We want to bring back dignity to the common folk and make us all proud that we are Filipinos."

She pointed to the "meeting of the minds" of two national candidates who built their alliance on a "pro-people-country-and-environment platform, and "not based on personalities."

"We both realized that we came from our humble beginnings--he was born in Tondo and I was born in the flood-prone Malabon. We both scaled the political ladder through sheer hardwork and patience. We are both self-made in our own respective fields before we ventured into politics--he in business and I in media."

The lady host served sushi and sashimi during the dinner arranged by a "private person."

Legarda observed that Villar was "very relaxed, very open."

"When I asked about Cynthia, he told me that she was attending a wedding. So I said, 'why don't you bring Cynthia here? Please ask the real boss to come," Legarda teased Villar.

And so Villar's better half came.

Asked about the fineprint of the political merger of the NP and NPC, Legarda said operational matters had not been discussed.

"It was a very light meeting focusing on the platform and alliance but operational details of the campaign were not yet discussed. There would be a formal press conference within the week to formally announce the alliance," she said.

Legarda was optimistic that the Villar-Legarda tandem would capture the imagination of the electorate.

"It's not only me winning, both of us must win. You must believe--do you have any doubt?--that I really want you to be my vice (president)," said Legarda, quoting Villar's exact words.

She said their "point of convergence" was the desire to "help heal our divided nation."
"We just want to focus on a positive campaign," said Legarda.
